Drilling rock for blasting before excavating for tower footing. Linemen assemble tower bodies in sections on the ground. With base of new tower erected in the background, linemen assemble next tower section on the ground to be lifted up by crane. Preparing excavation for placement of plate footing. Four required on each tower. Surrounded by wheat fields, construction contract crews lift a body section to be bolted on to a new 500-kV tower.
Workers bolt together complex steel lattice towers in sections on the ground to be lifted by crane in to place. Tower footings and legs are erected on the Grand Coulee-Bell Project, with large top sections assembled on the ground and waiting for placement on top by a larger crane to be brought in later. Linemen, trucks, and cranes jocky for position as crews string the first spans out of Grand Coulee Sub across 7 lines during what has been termed, The Mother of All Outages, on October 26. Construction crews finish back filling around newly installed footings for a tower at the edge of a cliff above the city of Grand Coulee, visible in the background. Three reels of conductor are positioned as stringing begins on the new structures of the Grand Coulee-Bell line.
The last nine implosive conductor fittings are set off simultaneously on the last structure of this first conductor pull for the 84 mile Grand Coulee-Bell 500-kV transmission line project. Contract crews detonate state of the art implosive conductor fittings, late at night, over 100 feet in the air on a tower for the new Grand Coulee-Bell 500-kV infrastructure project. Contract construction worker tightens up bolts on the plate footing for one of the new towers. Excavator is used to make way for one of the four tower footings to be installed at a tower site. At the manufacturers plant, steel plates are welded together to form one of the pieces of a tower.
Contract linemen bolt together a new section of a tower. Contract construction linemen position conductor on nine 9500 foot reels on three trailers as they get ready to string more towers on the Grand Coulee-Bell 500-kV line project. Another 22 of the nearly 30,000 ceramic insulating bells needed on the Grand Coulee-Bell 500-kV line project are positioned in to place.
