Safety Tips
Every year in the U.S. tens of thousands of people are killed or injured from contact with electricity. Water and metal are some of the best
conductors for electricity. Many of
those injured are kids who climb transmission towers or touch a down power line on the ground. Listed below are simple safety tips
that we should all follow when around power lines.
1) Take danger signs seriously!
When you see these signs, please make sure that you stay off the transmission towers and away from electrical
equipment.
2) Always assume a downed line is live.
Fallen power lines are extremely dangerous. Report any downed lines to BPA immediately by
calling 1-800-392-0816. Do not touch a downed line or anyone in contact with the line.
3) Never make contact with overhead power lines.
When you're using equipment outside, check to make sure the equipment is well clear of
power lines overhead. Your equipment may be closer to power lines than you think when you're:
- Working on a roof.
- Trimming trees.
- Using and carrying metal ladders.
- Using fruit-picking poles.
- Moving a boat with a mast.
- Installing or removing an antenna or satellite dish.
- Using a long-handled pool skimmer.
4) Beware of a downed power line touching a vehicle.
Stay clear of the vehicle and the power line. If a power line touches your vehicle
while you are inside, remain calm and follow these directions:
- If you can do so safely, stay inside the vehicle until emergency assistance arrives.
- Warn others to stay away from the vehicle and have them call SCE.
- If you must get out of the vehicle for safety reasons, jump clear. Do not touch the vehicle and the ground at the same time.
5) Do not remove anything caught in power lines.
If you see an object caught in a power line call BPA immediately at 1-800-392-0816.
